Puget Sound and Human Health

As humans, we are intimately connected to Puget Sound's food web whenever we eat fish or shellfish from its waters. Pollution in the environment often works its way through the biosphere and eventually to humans.

The Washington State Department of Health has issued consumption advisories that limit the amounts of seafood from Puget Sound waters that can be eaten safely.

Another source of concern is shellfish, which can be polluted by bacteria in the water, usually E coli. The Washington State Department of Health also has information regarding shellfish safety on its site.
