Patrol updates - March 2010

Chism and Foley

Tom Foley ReportsGroup shot - patrol

March 5:  Hi Everyone - here are a few pictures from the Puget Soundkeeper boat patrol on the Duwamish River.  Paul, Tim, Nick and I were there along with three new people.  One of the new people is very knowledgeable on geotech structural issues and is the first person I have met who has worked in the BoatWork-PatrolPicold Boeing Plant 2 building.

We spotted one instance of a fellow welding on a barge with the debris falling into the water.  Paul asked him to put up a barrier and he agreed to do it.

The tide was high so many of the outfalls were not visible.  PipeAs shown in the picture the large outfall across the river near Delta Marine was flowing and noticeably discoloring the river.  This has been a chronic occurrence with this outfall and has been reported many times.

We met up with Neal Chism pictured in the pontoon boat.  Neal ChismThis guy is a real hero who continually goes out on his own and retrieves a lot of litter from the river.

Neal Chism Reports

March 8:  Over the last several weeks, I have observed someone leaving full yard bags of trash along the Duwamish at Diagonal Park.  So far two bags have been Starfishleft at sea level and I caught the trash before the bags fully ruptured.  Is there a good way to stop the dumping?

March 19:  I was out on the river yesterday and spotted a beaver tail flapping at the south end of Kellogg Island. I Wood Duckwill try to photograph the beast today.

March 31:  Out on the Duwamish River last night was wonderful - a great many ducks around Kellogg Island now, as well as belted kingfishers and many other water birds.

Also seen was about fifty feet of used oil absorption booms.Spent oil absorbs  I towed the oil boom off the island, along with a soggy foam cabin cushion from a sailboat; then spent another hour watching the birds.
