Volunteer patrols form a central part of our effort to monitor pollution and prevent debris from contaminating our waterways. While on patrol, we keep an eye out for abnormal discharges and oil slicks. We also check for the application of best management practices by shoreline businesses.
Volunteers will be outfitted in double kayaks and paddle to a designated area of Lake Union to monitor water pollution and remove debris from the shorelines. If necessary, volunteers may help report pollution concerns to an appropriate agency.
No prior kayaking experience is needed and all equipment is provided (boats, paddles, PFDs, spray skirts and equipment for cleaning up trash). Everyone will be outfitted in a double kayak. Participants must dress for the weather and expect to get a little wet. Bags can be stored in the NWOC office. A safety overview will be delivered before heading out.
