Mussel Monitoring [November 4th]

November 4, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Mussel Watch Program is a biennial community science program. Teams of Puget Soundkeeper volunteers install mussel cages at eight different shoreline sites in King County during a fall late-night low tides. Volunteers collect the mussels about three months later and WDFW analyzes mussel tissue to determine the accumulation of various pollutants.

Eight teams of 3-5 volunteers are needed to help deploy the cages of mussels at the zero tide line on the evening of November 4th after a training at the Puget Soundkeeper Office in North Queen Anne. Deployment sites are along Puget Sound shorelines in King County (see Deployment Sites).  Once you register, we’ll contact you with further information on the deployment. If you’re interested in volunteering, RSVP here.
