People’s Hearing on Atlantic Salmon Net Pens

November 8, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Protesters hold signs on a fishing boat during a flotilla to protest Atlantic Salmon net pens in Puget Sound.

Clallam County has indefinitely postponed a hearing on Cooke Aquaculture’s $9 million Atlantic salmon net pen fish farm expansion proposal for the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The hearing was scheduled to take place on September 7, but following the catastrophic release of thousands of Atlantic salmon from Cooke’s Cypress Island facility, Cooke has requested that Clallam County indefinitely silence the voices of the affected public. We will not let this happen.

Students for the Salish Sea, Puget Soundkeeper Alliance and Sierra Club are convening a People’s Hearing in Port Angeles on November 8, 2017, to offer an opportunity for community voices to be heard. We will deliver comments to state and local officials, political leaders and Cooke Aquaculture.

Open-water Atlantic salmon fish farms have no place in Puget Sound. These operations bring disease, parasites and pollution to our waters and threaten native salmon and orca whales. Join us in standing up to protect our shared waterways.
