This month the federal government released a proposal to dramatically expand offshore drilling, potentially opening up nearly all federal waters to drilling lease sales for oil and gas. This includes the coastal waters of Washington State. You know as well as we do that this is a huge threat. The risk of a massive spill is real, and doubling down on fossil fuel extraction will worsen climate change and ocean acidification. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is hosting a public open house in Tacoma February 5th. This is the only one scheduled for Washington State. Because BOEM is not accepting comments at the meeting, our partners in the Stand Up to Oil coalition are holding a People’s Hearing at the same time.
Testimony at the People’s Hearing will be taken down by a stenographer and submitted as official comments to BOEM.
