The 2020 Trash Report details the work of the 327 volunteers who participated in Puget Sound ICC efforts from September through October of this year. In comparison to previous years, overall totals are different due to COVID-19, but volunteers safely cleaned up 297 miles of shoreline and removed 3,008 pounds of trash.

Marine debris, particularly plastic debris, pollutes many aquatic environments. Increasingly, this is a global problem as trash accumulates in the world’s oceans and concentrates in large gyres. Once in the environment, it poses substantial risk to marine life and human health.
On September 17, hundreds of people in Puget Sound and along the Washington coast will participate in the 31st annual International Coastal Cleanup, the largest single day volunteer effort to clean up beaches, lakes and rivers worldwide.
Puget Soundkeeper acted as the Puget Sound coordinator for the 2015 International Coastal Cleanup by partnering with non-profits, government agencies, businesses and community groups to support local cleanup efforts.
On September 19, hundreds of people at Alki Beach and Centennial Park will participate in the 30th annual International Coastal Cleanup, the world’s largest single day volunteer effort to clean up our beaches, lakes and rivers.
Throughout September and October, 576 volunteers combed Puget Sound shorelines to remove over 2,767 pounds of marine debris from their local waterways.
