Toxic PPD chemicals shed from tires and enter our waterways through stormwater runoff. The transformation product of 6PPD, 6PPD-quinone, has been linked to widespread harm to coho salmon and other salmonids.
Ban 6PPD in tires: Support HB 2421 and SB 6119 by signing in PRO
Both the House and the Senate are considering bills next week that would help prevent toxic 6PPD-Q from entering our waterways.
6PPD has been added to all tires, globally, for decades. It transforms into the toxic compound 6PPD-Q when exposed to ozone. That chemical has been shown to cause high mortality in coho salmon and threatens other aquatic species, Tribal treaty rights, and recreational and commercial fisheries. Research has documented extreme mortality of coho salmon, rainbow trout, and lake trout, among other fish, exposed to stormwater contaminated with 6PPD-Q.
Despite our clear and complete awareness of this danger, tire manufacturers need clear legislative and regulatory timelines to move away from 6PPD. Washington State must become the first state in the nation, and entity in the world, to ban this toxic tire chemical.
HB 2421/SB 6119 would work to accelerate the transition away from this toxic tire chemical and prevent the use of regrettable substitutes by: prohibiting the sale of tires containing 6PPD by 2035.
Puget Soundkeeper supports this bill, though we are continuing to advocate to speed this timeframe up to at least 2030, if not earlier!
We also appreciate that this bill authorizes the Department of Ecology to move forward on banning harmful 6PPD replacement chemicals – a vital step in protecting our environment and public health.
While Puget Soundkeeper is continuing to move up the ban on 6PPD in tires to at least 2030, we support this bill which offers pathway to protecting Washington’s rivers, salmon, and communities.
This bill is scheduled to be considered by both the House and Senate environmental committees next week.
